Current projections expect both the demand and cost of 60Co to grow in the near future. 60Co is used in a panoramic irradiator in medical, food and research-based industries for the sterilization of goods. In light of these recent projections, this study’s aim is to determine the costs and benefits of transitioning an existing cobalt-60 facility to an alternative technology x-ray or e-beam facility. To perform this analysis, assessment of the regulatory environment and current market for gamma irradiators versus non-radioisotopic sterilization methods was completed using open-source information. Specifically, this data collection was focused on expanding knowledge of the North American region along with regions where the industrial sterilization industry might be new or growing. Expert elicitation was solicited to certain commercial and federal entities to gather information on existing sterilization facilities; general information and the trends they predict for their facilities and others in the near future, including the benefits and disadvantages of the future use of gamma vs x-ray, e-beam and other modalities. In these preliminary results this study has provided a landscape view of the current market for 60Co across large and/or growing regions within the sterilization industry. This study has demonstrated the need to expand the use of alternative modalities due to an increasing demand and supply chain disruption. Companies in these industries were engaged and, while outreach didn't provide comprehensive costing information, the lack of information shared is a finding in and of itself. Survey answers, when compared, show likely trends for the use of cobalt-60 and advocate for alternative methods of sterilization in the food, phytosanitary, and medical industry.
